Publishing a dog magazine puts me in touch with so many interesting people and the dogs that have stolen their hearts. I never get tired of meeting new groups of people and their canines. Dog lovers enjoy talking about their dogs too – telling funny stories, showing great photos, asking other dog owners for advice or just expressing their joy in being lucky enough to have found their "best friend." And I so enjoy listening and sharing in their tales.
One thing I have learned along the way, however, is that no one dog breed or mix has more power over the human heart. Just as there are an infinite number of human personalities and characteristics, so too there are for canines. Whether a pedigree from a distinguished bloodline is your favorite, a "Heinz-57 or any and all in between, we love our dogs that is for sure. But what is it about each one that makes them special?
I am often asked for advice on choosing the best dog for a person or family. It is a difficult question and one that cannot be answered simply by looking at breed characteristics. Though the American Kennel Club does a wonderful job of defining the qualities that make the perfect specimen for various breeds, it might not be the best indication of what type of dog will fit into your lifestyle.
BocaDog Magazine has a section called "Why We Love..." where dog lovers can express why they find a particular breed or mix so special. What makes them great pets, what quirks do they have and what has the owner found useful to know when deciding on a particular dog. We invite you to share your thoughts on various breeds and mixes so that those looking to adopt can hear first hand what makes those dogs so special. Click here to share your thoughts.
